TRIPOLI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The eastern-based army of Libya on Saturday announced launching an airstrike on the Misurata air base, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.
"With precise planning, the air force targeted sites used to store Turkish drones TB2 in the air base of Misurata at dawn today," the eastern-based army's information office said in a statement.
"The airstrike accurately and successfully destroyed shipments of drones, causing successive explosions and burning of Turkish drones," it added.
"Turkish military support through air and sea ports of Misurata has been monitored. The transport of those military shipments has been tracked to the storing sites, including the Misurata air base. The drones have been stored to be used against the army from Misurata airport," the statement explained.
The eastern-based army's information office also confirmed that new Turkish military equipment has been shipped to Libya, "which clearly violates the UN Security Council's arms embargo on Libya."
The statement warned against using the city's ships and airplanes against transporting Turkish military equipment, "or else, they will be legitimate target to the Libyan air force. This is a clear and final warning."
Khalifa Haftar, commander of the eastern-based army, declared on Thursday the launch of the final stage of the military campaign in and around Tripoli, ordering his troops to further advance into the city.
Haftar's eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign in and around Tripoli since early April, trying to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
Thousands have been killed and injured in the fighting, and more than 120,000 people fled their homes from the violence.
