LUSAKA, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said on Sunday that it was carefully analyzing all contents related to comprehensive sexuality education before it was incorporated into the school curriculum.

Minister of General Education David Mabumba said this was aimed at ensuring that comprehensive sex education was not at variance with the country's cultural and religious beliefs.

While acknowledging that Zambia subscribes to international treaties and conventions that promote comprehensive sexuality education in schools, countries have national systems of choosing what kind of content was appropriate for its citizens.

Zambia, he said, could not avoid introducing sexuality education in schools because it was a signatory to international treaties that state that sexuality education and health were fundamental rights for pupils although the government wanted to be cautious, according to a release.

The Zambian minister, however, said one of the major sources of concern among African countries was deciding on what age was appropriate for the introduction of comprehensive sexuality education because the target for this type of education was pupils in lower primary school.
