TRIPOLI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Thursday said it had launched more than 10 airstrikes on positions of the UN-backed government forces in Misurata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.

"More than 10 consecutive airstrikes have been carried out," it said in a statement, adding the targeted sites included an ammunition depot, which was engulfed in flames from fire and explosions.

A military camp of the UN-backed government forces was also hit, with some 25 troops killed and injured, said the statement.

General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the eastern-based army, on Thursday ordered the start of the final stage of a military campaign since early April against targets in and around Tripoli with the aim of taking over the city.

The fighting has left several thousand people killed and injured and more than 120,000 displaced.
