TRIPOLI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government condemned airstrikes carried out by the rival east-based army in the city of Misurata, which left about 25 killed or injured in the UN-backed government troops.

"The Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord condemns the airstrikes carried out by foreign air force that supports the war criminal Haftar (east-based army commander), " the UN-backed government said in a statement on Thursday.

"These attacks will not affect our determination to defeat the aggressor and put an end to their illusions to return the totalitarian rule and control the lives of the Libyans," the statement said.

The east-based army on Thursday said it had launched more than 10 airstrikes on positions of the UN-backed government forces in Misurata, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli.

A military camp of the UN-backed government forces was also hit, with about 25 killed or injured, the army said in a statement.

Khalifa Haftar, commander of the east-based army, on Thursday ordered the start of the final stage of a military campaign launched in early April against targets in and around Tripoli with the aim of taking over the city.

The fighting has left thousands of people killed or injured and more than 120,000 displaced.
