TRIPOLI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Serraj called on the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Algeria and Turkey to activate security cooperation agreements.
In the letters Fayez Serraj sent to the presidents of the five countries, he called on them to activate security cooperation agreements to protect Libya's capital Tripoli from aggression of "any illegitimate armed groups," the PM's information office said in a statement late on Thursday.
Libya's UN-backed government on Thursday decided to activate a maritime memorandum of understanding signed with Turkey on Nov. 27.
The maritime boundary deal was denounced by Greece, Egypt and Cyprus as a violation of the international law.
Serraj also called on the five countries to cooperate and coordinate with his government against "terrorist organizations, mainly al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS)."
Serraj also urged the five countries to intensify cooperation against illegal immigration and combat organized crimes and human trafficking.
The east-based army has been leading a military campaign in and around Tripoli since early April, trying to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
Thousands were killed or injured in the fighting, and more than 120,000 people fled their homes to avoid violence.
Khalifa Haftar, commander of the east-based army, declared on Thursday the launch of the final stage of the military campaign in and around the Tripoli, ordering his troops to further advance into the city.
