LUANDA, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Angolan National Police seized 30 turtles from fishermen illegally trading the animals in northern Bengo province, local police said Thursday.

According to police chief Paulo de Sousa, some 14 turtles were seized on Wednesday, two of which were dead, while the other 16 were found on Thursday.

This is the first time that local police have seized turtles from the hands of locals, with de Sousa explaining that catching turtles is a regular practice in the area.

Local sources said that turtles are traded at 200,000 kwanzas (432 U.S. dollars) each by restaurant owners. Currently it is the spawning season for sea turtles, which swim ashore to lay eggs, making themselves easy preys.
