JAKARTA, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed when a train slammed into a car at a railway crossing in Indonesia's West Java province, a police officer said on Sunday.

The accident occurred at 22:15 p.m. Jakarta time on Saturday in Bekasi district of the province when the car with seven people on board went through the railway crossing, albeit the gate was closed and a warning was given by a resident, the district police's spokesman Sunardi said.

Besides, Sunardi said, the alarm at the crossing had given a signal that a train would be passing.

"But, all of those were ignored by the driver. The car kept moving. Consequently, it was hit by a train coming from Surabaya city toward Jakarta," he said. Surabaya is East Java province's capital city.

All the people on board were killed on the spot and have been rushed to Bekasi General Hospital in the district, according to Sunardi.

An investigation over the accident was underway, local media reported.
