Over 1.25 billion Indians possess Unique Identification Number

NEW DELHI, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The number of Indians possessing the Unique Identification Cards, or Aadhar Cards, has crossed the 1.25-billion mark, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said on Friday.

Provided by the Indian government, the Unique Identification Number contains of 12 digits, besides other details including photograph, eyes-mark, date of birth and address of every Indian citizen.

It's also available online for identification purposes to facilitate various government authorities.

The achievement comes along with the rapidly increasing use of Aadhaar as the primary identity document by the Aadhaar holders, said a statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

This is evident from the fact that Aadhaar-based authentication services have been used close to 37,000 crore (370 billions) times since inception. At present UIDAI receives about 30 million authentication requests every day, it added.

Also, residents are more inclined on keeping their details in Aadhaar updated.

UIDAI recorded close to 331 crore (3.31 billions) successful Aadhaar updates (biometric and demographic) till date. Presently the UIDAI receives about 300,000 to 400,000 Aadhaar updates request every day.
