RABAT, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Morocco foiled on Monday an attempt to smuggle 16.2 tons of cannabis at the Mediterranean Tangier-Med port, Moroccan police said in a statement.

A joint security operation between police and customs authorities at the port resulted in the seizure of this large amount of drugs concealed in wooden crates on board a trailer connected to a transport truck registered in Morocco, it said.

The driver of the truck, a Moroccan national aged 35, was arrested.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security agencies seized a total of 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, the Moroccan police revealed in its annual report on Dec. 25.
