YANGON, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar expects to earn over 40 billion kyats (26.7 million U.S. dollars) from gems and jade sale which kicked off in capital city Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday, an official from Myanmar Gems Enterprise (MGE) told media.

With 1,634 merchants registering for attendance, a total of 286 gems lots and 3,695 jade lots are being put on sale at the event which is scheduled to last until next Tuesday, said Managing Director Min Thu of MGE.

The MGE under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has been holding gems and jade sales in the country's states and regions, aiming to help local merchants to produce and sell raw gems and finished products, create job opportunities and prevent illegal exports.

The previous gems and jade sale, which was held in June 2019, fetched 60.89 billion kyats (40.6 million U.S. dollars) from the sale of 49 gems lots and 3,011 jade lots, with 2,010 local merchants in attendance.
