BANGKOK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Over 70 diary cows have died from, and 1700 others infected with suspected foot and mouth disease in Saraburi, Central Thailand, media reported on Monday.

Dairy farmers said they will be petitioning to Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on to seek urgent help.

Farmers in Tambon Lamphaya Klang, a district in Saraburi where most of the dairy cows were reported to have been infected, told Thai media that their cows started to show symptoms of the highly infectious disease since Jan. 5.

Meanwhile Chatcharee Niyamosot, a veterinarian at the provincial veterinary office, told media that the outbreak has been confined in 108 of about 2,300 dairy farms in Saraburi province.

The situation has improved though, 1,000 sick cows have recovered after being medically treated, Chatcharee said.
