SUVA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) has registered 16 new cancer cases in January alone this year with the youngest being a 24-year-old.

Last year, the Fiji Cancer Society recorded 250 cases, including 88 breast cancer, 23 cervical, seven ovarian and four prostate cancer.

In total 29 people lost their battle of the deadly disease.

According to the FCS, younger women were being diagnosed with cervical cancer these days and the trend was scary.

FCS Chief Executive Belinda Chan on Friday reminded Fijians on the importance of getting screened so the disease could be eliminated earlier if detected sooner.

Chan said breast cancer continues to be the leading cancer causing deaths in Fiji.

She said just this month alone the FCS has recorded nine new breast cancer cases, two prostate and four other related cases.
