DHAKA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's ruling party candidates have won the mayoral polls in the capital of Dhaka.
In the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) vote, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Awami League (AL) party's candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh secured 424,595 votes, while his nearest rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Ishraque Hossain got 236,512 votes.
In the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election, AL candidate Atiqul Islam got 447,211 votes to defeat Tabith Awal of BNP with 183,050 votes.
Returning Officer Abul Kashem for DNCC and DSCC's Returning Officer Abdul Baten announced the results Sunday.
Also candidates backed by the AL party have swept the councillor posts of the city polls.
Around 1,000 candidates contested in the elections to DSCC and DNCC. Of them, 13 were mayoral candidates and 980 were vying for ward councillor posts.
Ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's largest opposition party BNP Saturday called a dawn-to-dusk strike for Sunday in Dhaka, rejecting the results of two major city polls.
BNP leaders alleged on Saturday that their polling agents were forced out of hundreds of stations.
Ruling AL party leaders, however, ruled out BNP's allegations and claimed that the polls were peaceful.
