KHARTOUM, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Sudan government on Thursday denied that it was informed or consulted regarding the meeting of the Chairman of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The prime minister was not aware of the visit of the chairman of the Sovereign Council to Entebbe and his meeting with the Israeli prime minister, and there was not any notification or consultation regarding this matter," Faisal Mohamed Saleh, Sudan government spokesman, said in a statement Thursday.

"The matter of relations with Israel is an issue beyond the powers of the transitional government of limited mandate, and must be considered by the legislative body and the constitutional conference," it noted.

It further reiterated the Sudanese government's adherence to the slogans of "revolution" and solidarity with the oppressed peoples.

On Wednesday, al-Burhan said his meeting with the Israeli prime minister was in the interests of the country, noting that the meeting was coordinated by the United States and was with the knowledge of Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

Also on Wednesday, the Sudanese army said in a statement that it backs al-Burhan's meeting with Netanyahu.

Al-Burhan reportedly met with Netanyahu in Entebbe, Uganda, on Monday.

For years, Sudan has remained at the forefront of countries opposing normalization with Israel.
