WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Republican presidential contender Joe Walsh announced on Friday that he's ending his bid to challenge sitting President Donald Trump.
In a message to his supporters, Walsh, a former U.S. congressman, admitted difficulties in unseating Trump.
"The Republican Party is a cult. No one, no matter his or her profile, can defeat Donald Trump in a Republican Primary," he said.
Walsh's announcement came days after the Iowa caucuses, the first-in-the-nation nominating contests of the 2020 presidential primary.
Trump won the GOP caucuses easily, as Walsh and former Governor of Massachusetts Bill Weld, the only other Republican running against the incumbent, posed no major challenges.
On the Democratic side, there are still as many as 11 candidates seeking the party's nomination for the White House.
Full results of Monday night's Iowa Democratic caucuses showed a tight game between Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who's leading in national polls, and Senator Amy Klobuchar rounded out the top five.
The 2020 presidential race is shifting to the northeastern state of New Hampshire, whose primary is scheduled for Feb. 11.
