Czech Senate elects new president

PRAGUE, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Senate of the Czech Republic elected Milos Vystrcil of the Civic Democratic Party to be its new president, replacing Jaroslav Kubera who passed away in late January, the senate announced on Wednesday.

Vystrcil said after the election that he would like the upper house to uphold the constitution, serve as an executive watchdog, and anchor the country. He also said that he plans to improve cooperation with the lower house of the Parliament.

Vystrcil, 59, has been senator from the Jihlava District since 2010. Before that, he had been mayor of Telc, and governor of the Vysocina region.
