KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's inflation, as measured by consumer price index (CPI), rose 1.6 percent year on year in January on higher petrol price, official data showed Friday.
Malaysian Statistics Department said in a statement that the increase was driven by the index of transport which increased by 3.9 percent due to higher average petrol price.
Meanwhile, food and non-alcoholic beverages index, which accounted close to 30 percent in the CPI weighs, rose 0.9 percent.
Miscellaneous goods and services index rose 2.5 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels grew 1.7 percent; education and communication increased by 1.7 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.
On a monthly basis, CPI grew 0.1 percent as compared to December last year.
