Bhutan marks king's 40th birth anniversary with celebrations

THIMPHU, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Royal Monetary Authority, central bank of Bhutan has launched the new generation of Nu 5 and Nu 10 (Bhutan currency Ngultrum) denomination circulation coins coinciding on the birth anniversary of the King Friday.

On Friday the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck turned 40 years and people across the country marked the day with grand celebrations and various cultural programs.

The central bank announced that the coins are circulating legal tender coins, and will be available for exchange from all commercial banks and exchange counters of the centre bank starting mid May.

Drukair, the state owned airlines has also unveiled a new Airbus A320neo and registered after the king as A5-JKW to commemorate the king's birth anniversary. The airline has also launched a special edition magazine.

Speaking at the Changlimithang stadium in capital Thimphu, Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering urged all people to plant a tree and care for it, adopt a stray dog or commit to manage waste in their neighborhood.

Personal commitment such as this would be the best gift for the king, he said.

Taking inspiration from the King, the prime minister also announced several programs in the areas of economy, education, health and technology. Most of the programs will be launched within a year.

Across the country, different activities and programs were initiated including plantations, cultural programs, cleaning camps, sports and also social works.
