ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Police in Ethiopia's Oromia regional state located in the central part of the country On Monday disclosed it has arrested six individuals for suspected involvement in a grenade attack.
The grenade attack happened on Sunday in Ambo city, 110 kms northwest of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.
The attack which targeted a rally in support of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed left 29 people injured.
Speaking to media outlet, Ararsa Merdasa, Commissioner General, Oromia region police commission, said the grenade attack was carried out by members of an ex-rebel group Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) breakaway faction.
Officials have also blamed the OLF breakaway faction for the assassination of Burayu city security chief, Solomon Tadesse on Friday.
Tadesse was killed by gunmen on Friday afternoon while having lunch with several other colleagues. Three other people who were with Tadesse survived with bullet injuries.
17 suspected members of OLF breakaway faction have been arrested for suspected involvement in the assassination of the Burayu city police chief.
In the past two years, dozens of lower and medium ranking officials in Oromia regional state have been assassinated, with the Ethiopian government blaming a breakaway faction of OLF for the attacks.
