WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Gallery of Art (NGA) in downtown Washington D.C. is to present approximately 100 beloved works of French impressionist master Edgar Degas.

Among the highlights on view are the artist's most famous works inspired by the Paris Opera, curators said in a media preview on Tuesday.

"Although there have been many exhibitions celebrating Degas's love of the ballet, this will be the first to celebrate his enduring fascination with the (Paris) Opera," said Kaywin Feldman, director of the NGA.

Arranged thematically in eight galleries, the "Degas at the Opera" exhibition will officially open to the public from March 1 through July 5 this year to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Paris Opera's founding.

Degas, the eldest son of a Parisian banker, was born in 1834 and died in 1917. The subject of dancers dominated his art for nearly four decades.
