ABUJA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian military confirmed Tuesday that an unknown number of Boko Haram fighters were killed in airstrikes around the Sambisa forest, the base of the outlawed group in the northeast region.
Most of the militants killed were those who carried out a recent deadly attack on the Garkida community in the country's northeastern state of Adamawa, said Ibikunle Daramola, spokesman for the Nigerian air force.
The airstrikes were carried out between Sunday and Monday, destroying some of the Boko Haram's structures and logistics facilities in the Sambisa forest general area, Daramola said.
The operations followed credible intelligence that the Boko Haram militants who carried out the attack in Adamawa were within the Sambisa forest, he added.
