VIENNA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A 72-year-old man in Vienna, the capital of Austria, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the country's total cases to three, city councillor Peter Hacker said Thursday.

The other two cases were detected in Tyrol on Tuesday.

According to Hacker, the old man has not been in any of the affected areas such as Italy or China.

The man had been in the Rudolf Foundation, a municipal hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna, for ten days, showing typical flu symptoms, before he was tested for the novel coronavirus, said Hacker.

The diagnosis was made after a routine examination for all patients in the hospital was ordered due to the spread of the coronavirus. He was brought to the quarantine station in the Kaiser-Franz-Josef hospital, a general hospital specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

The patient's caretakers were brought home by trained personnel, where they now have to remain in quarantine. The same goes for the patient's family and visitors, who were also examined for the virus on Thursday.

By Thursday morning, 445 tests for the novel coronavirus had been carried out in Austria.
