BAKU, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan's health authorities announced Friday the country's first case of COVID-19.

A citizen of Russia, who was traveling from the virus-hit Iran via Azerbaijan, tested positive for the virus as he was taken to a tent field hospital set up at Azerbaijan-Iran border after showing symptoms.

The government established special headquarters on Thursday to coordinate Azerbaijan's response to the spread of the virus. The headquarters confirmed that the infected person, 23, was placed in a special infection ward and is in a stable condition.

Consisting of senior officials from relevant government departments, the headquarters are charged with monitoring the situation across Azerbaijan in order to take preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19.

The government also set up several hotlines to promote public awareness of the virus and prevent misinformation.
