YAOUNDE, March 9 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Development and Humanitarian Coordinator in Cameroon Allegra Baiocchi has condemned an explosion that killed at least one soldier during International Women's Day celebration in Bamenda, capital city of Cameroon's troubled English-speaking region of Northwest.
"On behalf of UN Cameroon, I strongly condemn the bomb attack on Bamenda. This is an act of indiscriminate violence and the shameful manipulation of International Women's Day as a platform to perpetuate violence," Baiocchi said in a statement on Monday.
According to Cameroon's Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, Emmanuel Rene Sadi, one soldier was killed, six government forces and a civilian were seriously injured after an improvised explosive device exploded in the city on Sunday.
The Cameroonian government has blamed armed separatists for carrying out the attack and pledged to restore security in the two Anglophone regions where separatists want to establish an independent nation they called "Ambazonia".
