KAMPALA, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) has awarded Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni with its highest award, the ANOCA Order of Merit, for his passionate promotion of sports.

A State House statement issued here on Tuesday said the award was handed over to Museveni on Monday by Mustapha Berraf, ANOCA president.

The highest sports honor of ANOCA is given to heads of state who have supported sports. ANOCA appreciated Museveni's leadership which has led to Uganda winning medals regionally and internationally.

"I am grateful for your recognition of our humble contribution to the revival of sports in Uganda. Our approach has been holistic. What is reviving sports and talent in Uganda is the recovery of the whole system and not just sports," Museveni said.

He said apart from sports being a source of revenue and entertainment, it is also helpful in building an attitude of cooperation with other people and helps to build character.
