MANILA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines had reported a second COVID-19 death, the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) said in a statement late Wednesday.

"The Department of Health confirms circulating reports regarding the death of a confirmed COVID-19 patient in Manila," the DOH said.

The DOH said the reported death is a 67-year-old female Filipino who was confined at a Manila hospital after showing symptoms on Feb. 29. The patient did not have a travel history.

"The DOH is currently gathering and validating more information on the reported death," the statement read, adding more details will be provided "as soon as it is available."

The Philippines has now 49 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with two deaths.

Meanwhile, Philippine Senate President Vicente Sotto said that the senate building in Pasay City, Metro Manila will be placed on lockdown starting on Thursday after an infected COVID-19 positive "resource person" visited the building recently to attend a senate hearing.

The person reportedly had an interaction with at least two senators while in the building. In a statement, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said he will go into self-quarantine.

Finance Assistant Secretary Tony Lambino also announced that Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez will also go into quarantine after meeting a "fellow" last week who tested positive for COVID-19 disease.
