ALGIERS, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian government will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the German initiative of DII DESERT ENERGY (DESERTEC) to generate power from solar energy, Algerian state-run ENTV reported on Friday.
"We are due to meet with representatives of DESERTEC initiative in April to work together to set up solar energy plants in the Algerian desert to generate electricity," ENTV quoted Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab as saying.
He said the MoU, which covers technical and training fields, would help Algeria accelerate the process of energy transfer and enhance the country's energy efficiency.
The Algerian government is giving priority to renewable energy resources which will hopefully generate 15,000 megawatts by 2030.
DESERTEC is a German initiative that explores potential renewable energy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
