Botswana suspends football matches amid COVID-19 fears

GABORONE, March 16 (Xinhua) -- As fears on the coronavirus pandemic continue, Botswana Football Association (BFA) has suspended all local football activities.

Mfolo Edwin Mfolo, the Association's Secretary General on Monday said the decision has been necessitated by the need to mitigate the risk of infection though there is not a single confirmed case reported in the southern African country.

"This decision will be kept under constant review," said Mfolo.

He further said the decision is a conscious towards the health and well-being of players, supporters and stakeholders, and those involved in the operation of football matter.

"We will constantly assess and monitor the situation, get advice and guidance from government and health officials and put contingency plans in place to respond to any emerging trends to COVID-19," Mfolo said.

The development comes at the backdrop of government announcement pleading with the nation to minimize mass public gathering including church service, music festivals and other public activities.
