PRAIA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Cape Verde reported its first confirmed case of COVID-19 late Thursday, according to the Ministry of Health and Social Security.

The patient is a 62-year-old British national who arrived on the island of Boa Vista on March 9 and started to show symptoms of fever and cough on March 16, Health Minister Arlindo do Rosario said in a statement.

"The patient is clinically stable and receives all the care necessary to avoid new contagions," he said.

The minister said he is counting on citizens and institutions on all Cape Verdean islands to stop the spread of the coronavirus and promised to do everything "to protect our country."

Cape Verde has already suspended all international passenger flights from Wednesday.
