THE HAGUE, March 20 (Xinhua) -- A Dutch court on Friday convicted 38-year-old Gokmen Tanis of murder with a terrorist motive and sentenced him to life imprisonment for opening fire on a tram in the city of Utrecht and killing four people on March 18 last year.
Tanis was also charged with three counts of attempted murder and threatening seventeen people with terrorist intent.
Tanis boarded a tram in Utrecht on March 18 last year, pulled out a gun and shot at passengers while shouting "Allahu akbar".
Almost immediately after his arrest that same day, he accepted responsibility for the shooting. In court, however, he was reluctant to answer questions. He did state that he committed his actions based on his religious convictions, according to Dutch media reports.
