YAOUNDE, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Voting in Cameroon's partial legislative elections kicked off Sunday in restive English-speaking regions, amid concerns over possible violence due to disruption from armed separatists.
Cameroon army said it has deployed "hundreds" of troops to secure the elections. Armed separatists have vowed to disrupt the elections and ordered a lockdown during polling in the regions.
On Saturday, Cameroon army said four soldiers and two election officials were "seriously" wounded in an attack by separatists as they attempted to transport election materials and candidates to Batibo, a locality in the Anglophone region of Northwest.
Nearly 300,000 registered voters from 11 constituencies are expected to vote in the elections that six political parties are competing for 13 seats of Cameroon's National Assembly which has in total 180 seats.
Cameroon held legislative election on Feb. 9. The results in these 11 constituencies were nullified on Feb. 25 by the country's Constitutional Council, citing irregularities during polling caused by violence of armed separatists.
