NICOSIA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Cyprus confirmed 11 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, raising the total for the part of the island under the jurisdiction of the internationally recognized government to 95, according to the Health Ministry.

Sunday's new cases were slightly above the 8-9 average announced over the past week.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Huang Xingyuan said a batch of medical supplies is en route to Cyprus from China.

"We are keeping close track of the first dispatch of med supplies already on their way from China to Cyprus. May they arrive in time to aid Cyprus' combat against COVID-19 at this critical point," the ambassador tweeted.

The announcement of the daily tally of new coronavirus cases was delayed by about 30 minutes on Sunday, as the two doctors who made the statement at the press conference were themselves confirmed to be among the 11 new infections.

Cyprus reported its first coronavirus death on Saturday, saying it was related to a British national who was infected by visitors in the hospital where he was hospitalized for other severe diseases.

Another 13 coronavirus patients were being treated in a special hospital, with their clinical health condition considered to be good, the Health Ministry said.
