Malawi fresh presidential poll set for July 2

LILONGWE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Monday announced that the country's fresh presidential election will be held on July 2 following the Feb. 3 court order that the election should be held within 150 days.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, made the announcement in the commercial city of Blantyre during the national launch of the Malawi 2020 Fresh Presidential Election, adding that nominations of candidates shall take place on April 23 and 24.

"Today, I am pleased to announce to you that the Commission has done its ground work and it is ready to hold these elections on 2 July, 2020," said Ansah.

She said the Commission will conduct voters' registration and transfers from April 4 to June 7 in accordance with the country's President and Parliamentary Elections Act.

The MEC Chairperson said nomination papers for the presidential candidates are ready for collection at the Commission's Head Offices in the city of Blantyre and that presentation of the papers will be on April 23 and 24.

The Commission has set the official campaign period to run from May 2 to June 30.
