KAMPALA, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Uganda has recorded five new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 14, a top health official said on Wednesday.
Henry Mwebesa, director general of health services, said in a televised address that two of the five cases are Chinese nationals, while the others are Ugandans, including an eight-month-old infant whose father returned from the Kenyan town of Kisumu.
One of the Ugandans has no history of traveling to the affected areas or contact with any of the travelers who have been to affected countries. This patient, according to Mwebesa, is a salt dealer at Elegu, on the border between Uganda and South Sudan.
Uganda has enforced a series of stringent measures aimed at containing the spread of the disease, closing its borders to incoming or outgoing international travelers.
The country has also banned all public gatherings and closed schools, centers of worship.
Security agencies have also started arresting people who do not follow the guidelines set by the ministry of health.
