NEW DELHI, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from COVID-19 in India rose to 10 on Wednesday evening, the health ministry said.
"Death cases related to novel coronavirus have reached to 10," reads the information released by the ministry at 6:45 p.m. (local time).
Meanwhile, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India Wednesday evening rose to 606.
"Total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across India is 606," the ministry said. "Of these, 563 cases are Indian nationals and 43 foreign nationals."
According to ministry officials, so far 10 deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported across the country and 43 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.
"The number of active cases in the country is 553," reads the information released by the ministry.
Maharashtra state has reported the highest number of cases, followed by Kerala.
"The confirmed positive cases in Maharashtra is 128 (125 locals and three foreigners), while as in Kerala the number is 109 (101 locals and eight foreigners)," the ministry said.
Maharashtra state has so far recorded three deaths related to COVID-19.
The Indian government Wednesday began a 21-day lockdown across the country in a bid to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.
All road, rail and air services have been suspended in the wake of the lockdown, except essential services that have been exempted.
