MANILA, March 26 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 shook the southern Philippines on Thursday night, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.

The offshore quake, which struck at 11:38 p.m. local time (1538 GMT), hit at a depth of 41 km, about 22 km southeast of Maasim town in Sarangani province.

The tremor was also felt in General Santos City, Koronadal City, and the provinces of South Cotabato and Misamis Oriental.

The institute said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, will trigger aftershocks and could cause damage.

The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
