WARSAW, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Poland has reached the 5,000 mark, the country's health ministry said on Wednesday.

As of early Wednesday, the country recorded 5,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, with 136 deaths in total.

Tuesday saw 435 new COVID-19 cases, the second-largest daily increase in confirmed infections, and 22 new deaths from the virus, the largest daily increase.

The numbers in Poland kept rising exponentially even after the government placed additional restrictions on the country's residents earlier this week.

These include special hours when only seniors are allowed in shops, limits on the number of clients in retail establishments, and a mandatory 2-meter distance between people, as well as a ban on meetings of more than two non-family members.

Police have reportedly started to fine people ignoring the new rules in what authorities say is a zero-tolerance policy.
