NEW DELHI, April 16 (Xinhua) -- India's federal health ministry said on Thursday evening that the death toll due to the COVID-19 in the country rose to 420 and the total number of confirmed cases reached 12,759.
"As of 5:00 p.m. (local time), today, 420 deaths related to novel coronavirus have been recorded in the country," read the information released by the ministry.
This is a jump of six deaths and an increase of 379 cases since this morning.
On Thursday morning, the number of COVID-19 cases in the country was 12,380 and the death toll was 414.
According to ministry officials, so far 11,515 people have been discharged from hospital after showing improvement.
"The number of active cases in the country right now is 10,824," read the information.
Thursday marks the 23rd straight day of the ongoing lockdown across the country announced by the government to contain the spread of the pandemic.
The lockdown which was announced on March 25 has been extended until May 3.
