ALGIERS, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian presidency on Wednesday warned that violations of the extended lockdown rules, which aim at containing the coronavirus outbreak, would ruin the progress in reducing death cases.

The Spokesperson for the Algerian Presidency Mohamed Belaid Oussaid told a press conference in Algiers that "Algeria is registering stability regarding the development of the COVID-19 pandemic, as shown by the daily official figures, but any violation of the quarantine rules would ruin all efforts made so far by authorities."

Oussaid stressed that Algeria "was close to exit the danger zone, which prompted the government to relax the lockdown, but the rush of citizens to markets without complying with social distancing rules forced authorities to re-tighten the measures."

He said the responsibility of the citizen is "key" in any effort aiming at containing this pandemic.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Head of the COVID-19 Detection and Follow-up Commission, Djamel Fourar, announced the registration of 186 new confirmed cases from COVID-19 during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 6,253.

Fourar noted that seven new death cases were also reported, bringing the total fatalities to 522.

Algerian authorities have extended the partial lockdown rules nationwide until May 31, as part of efforts at containing the disease, amid mounting infections and fatalities.
