Bangladesh, India records more COVID-19 cases as new daily infections in Japan's Tokyo hit 2-month high

HONG KONG, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh and India on Thursday recorded more COVID-19 cases among other Asia-Pacific countries, with the new daily infections in Japan's Tokyo hitting a two-month high.

The number of confirmed cases in Bangladesh surpassed 150,000 as 4,019 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, the biggest daily jump since March 8.

Cases in India surpassed 600,000-mark, reaching 604,641, as the death toll rose to 17,834, said the latest data released by the health ministry. The ministry said 434 new deaths and 19,148 positive cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country.

The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 107 new COVID-19 infections in the capital, marking the highest daily increase in two months and the first time the figure has topped 100 since May 2.

The latest daily tally of infections is also the seventh straight day that the cases have topped 50 and the highest number since the state of emergency was officially lifted on May 25.

Malaysia reported three new cases, pushing the total cases to 8,643, the Health Ministry said. Active cases dropped to 85, as the number of newly recovered cases continue to outpace newly confirmed ones.

The number of cases in the Philippines soared to 38,805 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 294 more infections. The number of recoveries further rose to 10,673 after 235 more patients have survived the disease.

The Philippines signed the joint circular on the guidelines for the establishment of the Philippine green lane to facilitate the speedy and safe travel of its seafarers, including their safe and swift disembarkation and crew change amid the pandemic.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,624 within one day to 59,394, with the death toll adding by 53 to 2,987, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference.

Afghanistan's Public Health Ministry has confirmed 186 new positive cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of patients infected with the virus to 32,022, a spokesman for the ministry Sayedudin Jami said.

South Korea reported 54 more cases, raising the total number of infections to 12,904. The daily caseload hovered above 50 for two straight days amid the continued small cluster infections and imported cases. Of the new cases, 10 were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,608.
