MANILA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 58,850 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,392 new cases on Wednesday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 20,976 after 517 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 1,614 after 11 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that as of Sunday, 73.7 percent of isolation beds and 77.4 percent of ward beds for coronavirus-infected patients of Metro Manila are already occupied.

On the other hand, she said 61 percent of intensive care unit beds are occupied while 36.3 percent of mechanical ventilators are now being used by COVID-19 patients.
