HONG KONG, July 27 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 cases surged Monday in some Asia-Pacific countries as India reported its highest daily spike of 49,931 cases and Australia also recorded the biggest daily increase in both infections and deaths, while Indonesia reported 1,525 new cases and 57 new deaths.
India's federal health ministry reported 708 more deaths and 49,931 new COVID-19 cases on Monday morning, taking the number of deaths to 32,771 and total cases to 1,435,453.
This has been the highest single-day spike in terms of fresh COVID-19 cases in the country.
According to ministry officials, 917,568 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement, and the number of active cases in the country stood at 485,114.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh reached 226,225 as 2,772 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.
Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a media briefing that 37 deaths were also reported in the last 24 hours across the country.
She said the total number of recovered patients in the country stands at 125,683.
The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,525 within one day to 100,303, with the death toll adding by 57 to 4,838, the country's health ministry said.
According to the ministry, 1,518 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 58,173.
The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 82,040 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,657 new cases.
The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 26,446 after 359 more patients have survived the disease.
The death toll also increased to 1,945 after 16 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said.
Australia recorded its biggest daily jump in COVID-19 cases with 549 new infections and 10 people passing away on Sunday after contracting the virus.
All of the deaths and almost all of the confirmed cases occurred in the southeastern state of Victoria which in the past month has seen case numbers surge despite the reintroduction of social distancing restrictions.
The state also recorded an additional six fatalities on Monday, taking the national COVID-19 death toll to 161.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for patience and said "all of the options" were on the table to fight against coronavirus.
Afghanistan reported 106 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total to 36,263, the country's Ministry of Public Health said.
Up to 1,269 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in February, an increase of 10 within the past 24 hours.
Out of the total infected people, 25,198 have recovered, including 18 who showed improvement and were discharged from hospitals since early Sunday.
South Korea reported 25 more cases of the COVID-19 as of midnight Monday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 14,175.
The daily caseload fell below 30 in a week, but it continued to grow in double digits due to small cluster infections and imported cases.
One more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 299. The total fatality rate stood at 2.11 percent.
Malaysia reported seven new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 8,904, the Health Ministry said.
One more case has been released, bringing the total cured and discharged to 8,601 or 96.6 percent of all the cases.
