CHARIKAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of floods during Tuesday night in Afghanistan's eastern Parwan province climbed to 73 with 100 others injured, the provincial government spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

"As of 3:00 p.m. local time Wednesday, figures indicated that 73 people died and over 100 others were injured in Parwan province in flooding and rain-related incidents," Wahhida Shahkar told Xinhua.

Nearly half of the provincial capital Charikar city has been affected by the floods, she said.

Rescue workers and security forces were still conducting rescue operations to search for victims under the debris, she noted, adding the final number of casualties will be shared with media later in the day.

More than 300 houses were destroyed by the natural disaster in the province, 55 km north of Kabul.

Torrential floods hit at least nine eastern Afghan provinces Tuesday night.
