KHARTOUM, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least two children were killed and 50 people injured in an explosion south of the Sudanese capital Khartoum, Sudanese Police announced Wednesday.

"An unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday evening at Jabal Awliya locality, which led to the killing of two children and injuring of 50 others, some of them with serious injuries," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, Sudanese police spokesman, said in a statement Wednesday.

"The incident took place because a person threw an explosive device during a wedding ceremony at Mayo neighbourhood in Jabal Awliya locality," he noted.

He said that the investigation efforts resulted in the arrest of the suspect, pointing out that a criminal case has been opened against the defendant under charges of murder as well as causing harm.

Rahim said the investigation into the incident is continuing under the supervision of the prosecution, noting that evidence indicated that the reason behind the incident is related to the marriage event itself.
