TUNIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The "terrorist" who was killed on Sunday by the Tunisian army forces in the west of the country is an Algerian, said the Interior Ministry in a statement.

The killed "terrorist," identified as Mourad Ben Hammadi Chayeb who is commonly known as "Ouf Abu Mouhajer," was involved in several attacks in Tunisia since 2013," a ministry statement said on Sunday night.

He was a member of "Katibat Okba Ibn Nafaa," a group belonging to the Islamist militant organization Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), according to the statement.

The "terrorist," who had been wanted by numerous search warrants, was armed with an FN FAL rifle when he was shot dead.

On Sunday, the Tunisian army forces carried out a pre-emptive operation in cooperation with the National Guard in the province of Kasserine, about 200 km west of the capital Tunis.

Another "terrorist" was captured during the operation.
