CAIRO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday praised the laborers' efforts in various production fields as the "driving force for progress."

"Egypt's loyal workers ... you represent ... the driving force for building and progress, the main axis of development and the firm base for production," Sisi said in a Facebook post as the country celebrates the International Labor Day.

The president expressed his appreciation to "all honorable workers, manufacturers and growers of Egypt whose strong will and sincere work help the country set out for a better future."

Since mid-March, the Egyptian government has taken gradual steps to contain the coronavirus spread, including suspending schools, universities and international flights and imposing a night curfew which impacted the daily income of workers, especially the seasonal laborers.

To contain the impact of the harsh anti-coronavirus measures, the government has allocated 500 Egyptian pounds (nearly 32 U.S. dollars) monthly salary allowance for informal workers.

Egypt's ministry of manpower said on April 26 that 2.5 million irregular workers will receive the three-month grant. Enditem
