KAMPALA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of prisoners on Wednesday escaped from a prison in Uganda's northeastern district of Moroto, a spokesperson said.

Frank Baine, Uganda prisons service spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the prison break occurred after prisoners shot some wardens guarding them in Moroto.

"There is a prison break. I am still getting the details of the prisoners who have escaped," said Baine.

"The number of those who have escaped is quite many. Give me some time. The details will follow," he said.

He said the joint security forces have launched the manhunt for the prisoners who are on the run.

"These people (prisoners) are being chased. All the forces are in - the army and police. We hope to apprehend them," said Baine.

At least three prisoners were killed and six others injured after riots occurred when inmates attempted to escape in the northwestern district of Arua in March. Enditem
