LUSAKA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Thursday directed the police to expedite investigations into the killing of two people when police were trying to disperse supporters of the country's leading opposition leader.

The Zambian president directed Inspector General of the Police Kakoma Kanganja to ensure that the investigations are quickened and that the report should reach his office by Monday next week.

He said in a statement released by his office that the killing could have been avoided and offered condolences to the families of the deceased.

"Yesterday's incidents were totally unnecessary, to put it mildly. An individual, in his person, was called by the police to answer charges, and yet we saw multitudes of uninvited citizens thronging the police station," he said.

On Wednesday, two people, including a state prosecutor and another supporter of the country's main opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema, were shot dead as police shotgun on a crowd of supporters who had turned up at police headquarters to show support for Hakainde Hichilema.

The opposition leader was appearing for questioning in relation to the purchase of a farm about 15 years ago. Enditem
