LUSAKA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday called for the prosecution of people found with fake education qualifications.

The Zambian leader, who went to verify senior secondary school qualifications with the Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ), said people with fake qualifications were diluting the standard of education in the country, adding that it was wrong to access employment with fake qualifications.

The Zambian leader, whose qualifications have since been authenticated by the country's examination body, urged the body to put in place measures that will encourage people to rewrite examinations so that they could have proper qualifications.

The Zambian leader's decision to verify his qualifications follows the new requirement that all people intending to contest in elections should have a senior secondary school certificate.

The ECZ has stated that qualifications from tertiary institutions like diplomas or university degrees will not be separately accepted without a senior secondary school certificate.

The president urged the body to quickly attend to people verifying their qualifications. Michael Chilala, director of the examination body said several centers have been opened in various parts of the country to speed up the verification process.

So far 12 people have been arrested with fake senior secondary school certificates. Enditem
