KAMPALA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- At least nine Ugandan drivers have been killed in deadly road ambushes in neighboring South Sudan, a top Ugandan government official said here Tuesday.
Kania Mario Obiga, minister of state for internal affairs told Parliament that the nine drivers were shot dead by unknown gunmen between Friday and Sunday along the Yei-Juba Highway.
"The (exact) number is not yet clear because some of the people who were injured could have died," said Obiga.
"This matter is known to the ministry of foreign affairs because all these people died in South Sudan. They are taking up the matter. Our embassy in South Sudan is handling it," he said.
The minister said authorities in Kampala and their counterparts in Juba are working to resolve the deadly attacks and killings.
"These people were killed by unknown gunmen. There are armed military groups operating in those areas who are apparently opposition forces to the government in South Sudan and they are in control of that area," said Obiga.
"Therefore the responsibility for that matter lies with the South Sudanese government. The ministry of foreign affairs is taking up the matter," he said.
The latest attacks come barely two weeks after a group of armed South Sudanese herdsmen killed eight fishermen at Odujo landing site in Kajo-Keji County, along River Nile shared by the two neighboring countries. Enditem
